There are levelheaded adults who don't put sex or even dating on the same emotional pedestal as monogamous folks, and will inevitably find other people who share those same ideals. And again, you saying it "devalues the core idea" just projects what you see relationships as into other people who don't see it the same way.
In the short term, Poly can work, Love and Lust are two vastly different things and Adults can separate those a lot of the time but that is not how the human brain works, think of it like this, when you share your love with someone or sleep with them, it effects our brains on levels many cannot understand, it's like imprinting yourself on an animal when they're young, our brain attaches itself to one person and when it moves around from partner to partner it actually lessons the effect each time, You basically unknowingly devolve how your brain sees relationships.
